Swoop! A Fast-Paced Card Game with a Twist
It’s easy to learn, quick to play, and offers a surprising amount of strategic depth for a simple game. So, clear a table, shuffle the deck, and get ready to swoop your way to victory!
Objective: Be the first player to get rid of all your cards!
About Swoop Card Game
Swoop is a shedding game for 2-6 players. The goal is simple: be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
But unlike classic shedding games like Crazy Eights, Swoop throws in a fun twist: the “Swoop” mechanic. This keeps the game dynamic and unpredictable, making it a blast for players of all ages.
How to Play Swoop Card Game
- Deal and Setup: Shuffle a standard deck of cards (removing jokers is optional). Deal five cards face down to each player and four face up in a row in front of them. Place the remaining deck face down in the center as a draw pile. The player with the highest card revealed (suits don’t matter) goes first.
- Playing a Turn: On your turn, you can play one or more cards from your hand that match the value (number) on the top card of the discard pile in the center. You can also play any card(s) that are lower in value than the top card. Here’s the twist:
- Swoop! If you play four or more of the same value card (including those already on the discard pile), it’s a Swoop! You immediately remove all those cards from play and discard another card from your hand (or the face-up row in front of you) as your next action. You get to keep playing as long as you can make Swoops! This can lead to explosive turns and dramatic shifts in who’s ahead.
- Picking Up the Pile: If you can’t play a matching or lower card, you must pick up the entire discard pile and add it to your hand. This can be a real penalty, so careful card selection is key.
- Drawing Cards: After taking any actions (playing cards, Swooping, picking up the pile), you can draw one card from the draw pile to replenish your hand to five cards.
- Winning the Round: The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the round. You can play multiple rounds to a set score or simply keep playing until everyone’s had enough laughs (and groans!)
Fun Facts about Swoop:

- Swoop is a great game for people who dislike holding onto cards for too long. The fast-paced nature and constant card movement keeps everyone engaged.
- Variations exist where Jokers can be used as wild cards or act as automatic Swoop cards.
- Swoop is a perfect travel game due to its simple setup and short playtime.
