History of Thanksgiving Day
The start of Thanksgiving is related to an incident that happened in 1620.
In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England with 102 passengers on board to discover the New World.
After a treacherous voyage lasting 66 days, they arrived at the mouth of the Hudson River near the tip of Cape Cod, north of their intended destination.
A month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they were now commonly known, began establishing a village in Plymouth.
During that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained aboard the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy, and outbreaks of contagious disease.
Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers lived to see their first New England spring.
In March, the remaining settlers moved to the coast and began harvesting crops with the aid and alliance of the Native Americans of the area.
This alliance is unfortunately one of the only examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans.
When was the 1st Thanksgiving celebrated?
In November 1621, when the Pilgrims first successfully harvested corn, Governor William Bradford organized a three-day celebration, which is remembered as the American “First Thanksgiving”.
Although it is argued that The Pilgrims themselves may not have used the word “Thanksgiving” at the time.
Historians also argue that the Pilgrims had their first true Thanksgiving in 1623 when they gave thanks for the rain that ended a drought.
In the late 1600s, giving thanks after the harvest became more common and became an annual event.
George Washington, the first president of the United States, proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day in 1789.
But it officially became an annual holiday in 1863.
