Florence Pugh Reveals New Techniques Used for ‘Oppenheimer’

In a recent interview with the Radio Times, Florence Pugh revealed that Christopher Nolan used “indie movie-making” techniques while filming his upcoming biopic, Oppenheimer.

The Oscar-nominated actress said that the experience reminded her of her early career, when she was used to a fast-paced and collaborative way of working.

“It reminded me of the early days when I was used to a fast-paced way of working — where, if you lost a scene from the day, you would lose it from the movie,” Pugh said. “It’s one of the biggest movies I’ve ever been a part of, but it felt like an indie.”

Nolan is known for his ambitious and visually stunning films, such as Inception, The Dark Knight, and Dunkirk. However, Pugh said that Oppenheimer was different from anything she had ever seen before.

“It’s a very different kind of movie for Chris,” she said. “It’s a very intimate story, but it’s also a massive epic. It’s a strange mix of the two.”

Pugh plays Jean Tatlock, a communist activist who was romantically involved with J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who led the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb. The film also stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, Emily Blunt as his wife, Katherine, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.

Oppenheimer is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 21, 2023.

In addition to using indie movie-making techniques, Nolan also employed a number of other unconventional methods while filming Oppenheimer.

  • He shot the film on 65mm IMAX film, which is a format that is not commonly used for big-budget blockbusters.
  • He used a hand-held camera for much of the film, which gave it a more documentary-like feel.
  • He filmed many of the scenes in real locations, rather than on studio sets.

These techniques helped to give Oppenheimer a unique look and feel that is unlike any other film that has come before it. They also allowed Nolan to tell the story in a more intimate and personal way.

The use of indie movie-making techniques on a big-budget film like Oppenheimer is a bold move, but it is one that is paying off.
